Bulldogs 1/2 Game Out of 1st!

On Friday, the Bulldogs Softball Club were sweating a potential forfeit, as they were waiting on at least two more players to show up to bring their starting lineup to 9 players. However, three-minutes prior to game-time the Dogs two final players showed up and proved to be all that was needed to win on this day.

The Bulldogs went on to beat Ronin Risk 18-4, barely avoiding what looked to be an immanent forfeit. The Dogs struck first with one run in the 1st inning. However, the flood gates were opened in the 3rd as the Bulldogs put up 6 runs on 7 hits. In the top of the 3rd the Bulldogs continued their rally by adding another 9 runs on 10 more hits.

Playing good defense allowed the Bulldogs to keep Ronin Risk at bay with only 4 runs. The Bulldogs Softball Club capped off their score in the Top of the 4th with another 2 runs and that would be enough to end the game early.

“We were fortunate to even be playing tonight.” said Nelson Rivera, referring to the potential forfeit early on. However, Nelson was one of the key contributors to the victory going 4 for 4 with 3 runs and 2 RBI’s. He started at 2nd Base, but ended up moving to 3rd in the 2nd inning as a nasty cold was taking a toll on him early in the game.

The coup de grâce came in the 3rd inning when Nelson Rivera scored Angel Cortes with a single to give the Bulldogs the 5 runs they would need to win the game. However, they didn’t stop there as Jeff McMahon capped off that inning with a 2-run homer. Jeff went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, homerun and 3 RBI’s.

John Kontek, Ken Benson and Jim Janetopolous (Jano) were key to the success in the top half of the lineup. Combined they were a whopping 12 for 14 and accounted for 9 of the 18 runs scored in the game. Jano homered in the 3rd inning, as well.

Though disappointed a bit with his performance at the plate, Sean Killham pitched another rock-solid game only allowing 4-runs on the day. Sean contributed in the field with several nice plays from the mound, as well.

Little did the Bulldogs know that this victory would put them half a game closer to 1st place, as Aftershock dropped their first game all season to Dasbach 14-11. This was a huge win for Dasbach as they only have two losses on the season.

With only one loss for the Bulldogs, Aftershock and Tailgaters, there is a close race for 1st place. Southside Hitmen, who beat the Bulldogs earlier this season, are also nipping at everyone’s heels with only two losses on the season.

The Bulldogs are set to meet the replacement team to Lincoln Mutual, Closers, this Friday at 6:30pm. Since taking over for Lincoln Mutual, Closers has put up a record of one win and one loss.
